WM Phoenix Open: Chris Gotterup beats Hideki Matsuyama in play-off with Scottie Scheffler tied third

Chris Gotterup came up on the rails to win the Phoenix Open after beating Hideki Matsuyama in a play-off.

Gotterup, who won in Hawaii earlier this year, produced a brilliant fourth-round 64, which included five birdies in the last six holes, to put himself in contention on 16 under in Arizona.

But the tournament was in Matsuyama's hands as he had a putt on the 18th to win it. However, he did not make it and was soon in a watery grave on the extra hole.

That allowed Gotterup to seal victory in style, sinking a lengthy putt to card a birdie.

"I didn't think this would happen, especially after Friday and Saturday. But here we are," Gotterup said after the win.

Gotterup could not put his finger on where his purple patch has come from, saying: "God, I don't know. I really have no idea. I'm just having such a good time playing right now.

"You make me cry every time. My girlfriend is here. She's like, you've won three times without me here, and she got to see it, and I know everyone at home is watching. Just so awesome."

Scottie Scheffler also stormed up the leaderboard with a final round of 64 to finish in a tie for third, while England's Matt Fitzpatrick carded three birdies in his concluding five holes to end the tournament in ninth, three shots back.

"I put myself in a tough position after the first round, but three really solid days," Scheffler said. "Today was another really good round. I'm going to fall a few shots short it looks like, but overall proud of the fight this week and did some good stuff.

"I played pretty well," he added. "Only one round where I didn't have my best stuff. If I get in the house the first day a couple under par, it's a little different story today. Overall, proud of the way I fought the last three days to give myself a chance."
